Multicultural education:the rainbow nation myth or reality?

This paper investigates the notion of multicultural education as it is currently understood in the education sector in South Africa.I traced the origins of this concept and analysed how it is understoo by practitioners in education.The main thrust of my argument is that,although multicultural education is premised on the objectives of reconciliation and group interaction based on democratic principles,it is actually not unfolding as envisaged.This argument is based on an in-deph analysis of the concepts reconciliation,rainbow nation and democracy.I invoke constitutional prinples to substantiate my argument.I drew data from empirical envestigation and concluded ,on the basis of the findings, that multicultural education will not achieve what is envisaged by reconciliation and democracy.

23 Jul 2002 - We may need to reflect on what exactly we mean by multi-cultural education. Education is not value-free. If we accept all of the fundamental assumptions of a dominant worldview, and then merely graft some other cultural perspectives within the dominant paradigm, can we say that it is truly multicultural? I think the cahllenge is drawing from other traditions in such a way that we are open to consider what education is and means in such traditions, by using their own cultural and perceptual lenses. - Shamim
