Groups doing research on collaborative learning environments

  • The Learning Environments for Progressive Inquiry Research Group at the Univerisity of Art and Design Helsinki, Finland amongst other things focus on computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and developed the Fle3 learning management tool of which Rob Reynolds (2003) says in an Xplana comparative review - "if you are pushing a collaborative, group sharing learning environment, you should ditch everything else and give this a try".
  • The Collaborative Content Creation Lab (C3L) is a Canadian partnership seeking to "provide faculty the collaborative authoring tools and transition support ... to exploit the power of their communities of practice". "Today, collaboration toward review, augmentation or co-development of content, is typically accomplished ad hoc by faculty with file attachments sent via e-mail. There is no persistent, shared content space or appropriate authoring tools for collaboration within an academic community of practice." In the process they, inter alia, hope to assist with "the struggle that novices face to enter, and become encultured in, a community of practice in order to proficiently (and collaboratively) author e-learning content". Release 2 of the C3L system was due in late 2003.

Groups doing research on collaboration generally

  • The Locative Media Lab is interested in how next generation mobile devices can transform "the social, economic and informational fabirc of society". Most of the scenarios they are interested in have to do with collaborative information work - e.g. collaborative mapping.
  • The Co-Intelligence Institute "works to further the understanding and development of co-intelligence. It focuses on catalyzing co-intelligence in the realms of politics, governance and cultural evolution. We research, network, advocate, and help organize leading-edge experiments and conversations in order to weave what is possible into new, wiser forms of civilization."
